Where are you going?
Where are you going?
1 Peter 1:14-16 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
Let me state the obvious. When beginning a journey to a place you have never been, it is very important to know where you are going. Knowing the location, direction and address is needed input for your GPS device. Some directional systems even have the ability to navigate around impediments which may slow your journey but always returning you to the path which leads to your final destination. Lacking the knowledge of where you are going and the best path leading you there can be confusing and dangerous. Such is the case with our Christian walk. It doesn’t matter if you are a new Christian or a well-seasoned one, you need to know where you are going.
Peter, in our verse today, instructs us to set our spiritual GPS upon the goal of pursuing holiness and purity. He doesn’t say set your sites on perfectionism but upon holiness. The world of sexual sin is around us consistently and constantly. In verse 13, Peter instructs us to “gird up the loans of our mind.” In other words, pull in the loose ends of your thinking and be focused upon the desired destination. He also commands us to be obedient and don’t return to lusting. Pursuing holiness and sexual purity each day is difficult to perform in a land which promotes self-reliance and the hedonistic pursuit of happiness. We need His word and Spirit to direct each step of the way. We need fellow travelers to encourage and challenge us when the journey becomes overwhelming. Today, you may have recently fallen into sexual sin and wondering where to go from here. Cast off the burdens of your past sinful falls through God’s grace, mercy and forgiveness. Now, where are you going from this point? Will you be drawn back into your former lust or will you be steadfast in the pursuit of holiness and sexual purity?
